A “beautiful human being” is one who lives in harmony with their virtues—wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance. Such a person is not fragmented or torn between competing desires, but rather lives with a unity of thought, intention, and action. This inner integrity allows us to remain steady, to live with purpose, and to be at peace with ourselves, regardless of external pressures. Marcus Aurelius emphasizes that to be truly human is to focus on what our proper work should be. Our work is not to accumulate wealth, power, or influence, but to fulfill our nature by living virtuously, by exercising our reason in the service of what is good, and by contributing to the common good of humanity. To apply this wisdom, we must constantly return to the question: What is my proper concern? Instead of being scattered by the noise of the world, we need to cultivate that unified self, grounded in reason and virtue. Our humanity is not defined by our circumstances, our successes, or our failures, but by the alignment of our actions with our higher nature. When we live with this unity, we become not only more fully human but also more resilient, more compassionate, and more capable of navigating the challenges of life with grace. image

I’ve not read it (yet). However from reading other stuff by Ryan Holiday (namely The Daily Stoic), I’m very familiar with Aurelius, albeit from reading his work second hand. He is my favourite of the stoics. Always so on point. I’ll make a note to advance Meditations on my reading list. 🤜🤛
