Digg is an example of an "other site" that also used the same design. They stopped doing it for the same reason reddit did - because it worked too well and they are centralized platforms so they do what the money printers want, with no regard for what users want. Even if I looked at digg you got one site compared to what came out after /r twas twitter/x, instagram, mastodon, misskey/calckey/firefish, spacehey, blusky, & etc none of them used it because the whole feature is stupid & pointless.
