I expect to attain my ham license soon. My interest are to be able to have access to information that might provide situational awareness over the amateur network. I am looking at a starter radio and believe a Yaesu FT-65R HT might be the thing. If there are recommendations for a different starter radio, please share them. Is there a mobile radio, convertible to a base station that I should consider? #hamradio

All mobiles can be base radios with a base antenna and a power supply. For 2m and 70cm this is what everyone does except the few who do those bands on the very expensive HF radios that also support those bands. If it is in the budget, consider the yaesu vx6r HT instead. It is a superhet instead of SoC so it will reject unwanted signals better. Submersible instead of just water resistant. It also has wideband recieve so you can listen to many other frequencies outside of the usual HT bands for greater situational awareness. Many consider it the king of prepper HTs. Mine is my go to backwoods carry radio.
