I have been studying Bitcoin since 2013! I also run a Bitcoin node, but I never got used to LN. I don't really know how to recommend it to ordinary people without sending them to some centralized intermediary :/
Lightning is the best (when it works haha). You still have to know inbound/outbound liquidity but it's gotten a lot better in the past 2-3 years. Check out these non custodial options: @ZEUS makes an amazing phone wallet Phoenix wallet is fantastic Raspiblitz runs a lightning node on your own raspi @Start9 makes an unbelievable ecosystem and a large step up from raspiblitz @Coinos is super simple wallet to onboard normoes and is nice to transition from non-kyc/centralized to self custodial. Ecash and cashu are incredible projects and stable but still early. @KoalaSat can help buy/sell on lightning. There's a lot happening on bitcoin layer 2/3!
