I just read this and was persuaded that there is no substitute for intrinsic motivation:
you either start doing something because you really feel like doing it, or you're probably not the person to do it (or the "it" is dumb and shouldn't be done)

I think it depends on the type of task too. Menial tasks often require extrinsic rewards to motivate someone to complete them, whereas highly complex and creative tasks are best completed by those motivated from within. Something I see all the time with my students.
