Fun fact: the founders never debated whether the people should be armed. It was simply understood that an armed populace was the best defense of a free people. Records of the continental Congress show no debate on the matter, and what became the second amendment was hardly discussed beyond a few changes to phrasing. They did, however, debate very publicly and passionately whether the federal government should be allowed to have an army at all.
