It works in sort of the same way. But Broadcast doesn’t show up as a repost in your feed. It just adds the note to your own set of relays so more people can see it.

However, even if all relays follow the standard, clients can broadcast events to the relays they are connected to, which can very often lead to a note from one user on one relay reaching the feed of a user on a different relay, by for example a repost/broadcast from a third client connected to both relays. Correct me if I am wrong

That's probably how it works. I didn't find it in the protocol-description, though.

Let's say a company or membership group wants to set up their own private relay just for members/employees. The broadcast feature could mean that to keep their posts private, or within the group, they'd need their own app with their private relay(s) as the only relay. Just trying to think through future use cases and implications.

I wonder in that case, could the "DM" feature be made to work for group chats?

I think that’s on the roadmap. And if you look at the Damus website it even says, “Your very own social network for your friends or business.” So in theory you could build a client that only has private relays.

No, just a function of how the client handles it when reposting.

It would make sense to me to have a distinct note type for deliberately “retweeting” a note, vs any reaction resulting in a “retweet”

We're not talking about retweeting. Rebroadcasting just means that it is sent to all the relays you use, that way they don't have your reaction without the original event referenced.
