The book Technofeudalism is all about this type of thing. We are being herded down a path of no longer owning things and are effectively becoming serfs to big tech. Subscriptions/Rentals rather than owning/controlling our stuff.

I fucking hate it. We only got PSN plus a few months ago so my son can play a few games with his friends, I've never liked the idea of rent to play. Streaming services, gaming subscriptions, it's double payment on everything and still shit.
All subscription plans sound great to start with and then they start tweaking what you get, how much it costs, and quality generally drops over time. 🫤
