My notifications became unusable after the hell threads.
I can't even open the original thread to mute it, because once I click on the respective notification all I see is "Looking up message..." forever and nothing loads.

Have you tried to start muting from the notifications view and gradually work your way up to the main thread.
You could try a cmd/ctrl + R refresh on the browser or quit & restart the app to refresh the cache and get the latest updates since the thread was already some hours ago.
