We need to make people understand that Bitcoin is like Linux or FreeBSD. You have the option of using proprietary, closed-source money like fiat money, or using free, open-source money like Bitcoin.

Well, there is hope. Consider that Linux has a monopoly at the server level.
For example, among the 500 most powerful supercomputers in the world, only Linux exists.


This is the issue, most people don’t understand the distinction of proprietary vs. FOSS, so they can’t carry this understanding over into different domains, like money.
That's true but on the other hand even though android is Linux based they've locked it down into oblivion. IOS is a BSD fork but that's also locked down.
Maybe bitcoin really just won't have the mass adoption without the same kinds of lockdowns
