I fear the truth is exactly that!
It is in our nature to worship, to exhault, it is written in our way of being and if we do not assign that necessity to the highest, then we make gods of something else, for some it becomes money or work, perhaps politics or sexual partners or intoxicating substances. The worst offenders end up following the path of Lucifer/Iblis and worship themselves at the expense of everyone else around them.

Unfortunately, believing in God doesn't really prevent believing anything. I have multiple examples of christians believing all kinds of BS.
