Interesting that you mention the 16th century... isn't it an interesting time and tells its own story? It covers a period of enormous power and global importance and wealth for Portugal - but also ends in a phase that overtaxed the country... Do you know the book "the fourth turning" by William Strauss and Neil Howe ?

It is a very special book, and some people have an intrinsic sense of the cyclical nature of time. The 11th chapter on preparations is worth reading
