I don't edit them unless I intend to use that client often. In which case, they should be set exactly as you prefer since it's rewriting your list. As far as I know, I don't have visibility problems since most of the hard coded relays are pretty big. Those notes still make it to my write relays, even when the client is not sending them directly there.
I'm not 100% sure I understand any of this correctly, so please take my input with a grain of salt.
