Wouldn't you prefer to control a southern border that's only 600-ish miles (Guatemala and Belize), instead of 2000+ (currently with Mexico), and be able to erase the cartel problem forever? Isn't that and human trafficking some of the biggest REAL problems the US has? Plus you get, REAL, not theoretical, natural resources: gas, oil, land for cattle and to farm infinite agricultural products from a variety of climates, not to mention thousands and thousands of additional coastline and access to fisheries. And 130 million new citizens/consumers. "Demographic crisis" solved.
