Does Amethyst work on it? ๐
Can we install a degoogled android build? Graphene os? I won't ever run a full (googled) android device.
Showstopper for me. Grapheme can't be installed on every device, especially here because of the unique screen I imagine it can't
You'll be reporting your location, app usage, and god know what else to the google mother ship whenever you use the device sadly.
Android, or AOSP, the Android Open Source Project is an open source operating system that anyone can download and use. People can also customize Android. Examples of this are Amazon, Google, Rabbit, Daylight, Graphene and many more. It's all Android under the hood based on AOSP with varying levels or customization.
I bet the F-Droid version would.
Yes
So does their custom Android preserve privacy or not?
No.
so tempting...
but gonna pass
Depends what you're planning on doing with it. I use an e-ink device that's purely used for when I'm outside in bright conditions. Installed obtanium for a few apps and never logged into anything with any person information. Gets the job done
What phone is that?
I Wana know
That's a question for them. We don't know what they've done to their custom OS.
is that a Daylight phone!?
Is that the HiSense A9? I was hoping they would release a model with a color eink display and have been eying one since the A5 was introduced but the relatively high price, (because of the eink display) wonky Google playstore support, and low battery capacity kept holding me back. I'd really like to see an eink phone with a week, or longer, stand-by time and think this would be doable with a big battery. The HighSense A9 also doesn't come with an IP rating so be careful with splashes around the pool, the main reason why I'd want one in the first place because of bright sunlight.
Looks like a Boox palma (not phone, but phone sized tablet)
Boox Palma. Not a phone as it has no SIM card which I prefer. Can't flash graphene on it but I don't use it for anything sensitive. I just use when outside for a couple of specific tasks and of course plenty of trading content
Also like Derek states, you don't really want to be using these devices as a daily driver due to then running older android versions which can be an attack vector.
A secure WiFi connection then run obtanium on for some foss apps without login credentials, a decent browser and Nostr client with npub watch only login in my opinion is ok. But depends obviously on threat model.
Boox Palma, battery life is great as long as you don't load too many apps on it, don't leave WiFi or Bluetooth running.
what phone is that?
Boox Palma. No SIM card slot
Ah, I see. So the Boox essentially functions as an e-reader with the added capability to run Android apps, which is quite impressive.
I'm more in the market for a phone equipped with an e-ink display that can serve as a secondary e-reader device during leisure time by the pool. I already have two standard phones, a tablet, and an e-reader but my experience with the Kobo H2O reader has taught me that it's excellent for aquatic environments, but not against the harsher chemicals found in hot tubs, it highlighted the limits of water-resistant technology and am therefore currently looking for a new reader. ๐ ๐คฃ To reduce the number of devices I need to charge, an e-reader with mobile radio and two SIM slots would be best for me. The search continues.
Yes that's quite a specific use case but I'm sure something is out there. I know the ones that think they'll be able to do everything like normal with these new Daylight computers are going to have a rude awakening, as much as I'd love it to be the case it's just never going to happen.
A cool toy though albeit very expensive
