It's more about the frequencies you are allowed to transmit on, what power levels you are allowed, etc. Radios can range from handheld units to the kind you're thinking of, pricing from $20 to infinity depending on budget and needs 👍

The blackout in Iran thing was the extra nudge to get on it. That and Bitcoin price is boring me to tears, so I need new hobby
I've got mine set to only transmit on FRS & GMRS frequencies, receive only for everything else. It's still interesting to listen in on ham stuff, the airport radio, plus local commercial wireless stuff. Quite a bit is now on digital radio, mine is only analog, but it's enough to learn with.
