I wish it were that easy. If it was, I wouldn’t have had to restart my mute list more times than I can count.
Here’s the thing, we are told to keep your relay list minimal as your experience would benefit from this. Some clients even have their own default lists of relays and if their list doesn’t have the same relay that you used to create your mute list, all of your mutes go bye bye.
Derek said your mute list is stored somewhere else, and you have to fetch it and save it yourself. Imagine how frustrating that can be to a seasoned nostrich let alone someone who just joined and is having a hard time navigating all of the complexities that make up Nostr.
My point is, if you can save your follows and followers to your nsec, there is absolutely no reason why your mute list and relay choice can’t be stored there as well.
This is why Nostr has plateaued.l and why it will only ever appeal to the tech savvy.
One way to make your onboarding easier would be to allow a new user to use a sign in option they are more familiar with. No one wants to hear if they lose their nsec, they lose access to their account, that’s not going to attract many people.
If you look at satlantis, they seem to be the only project who understands this so they give you the option to sign up with your google/apple/facebook/instagram account. Then, once you get comfortable with Nostr, you can sign in using your nsec and detach your other account from it.
Both of these ideas are pretty basic and something you would expect from clients trying to attract you, but they’re not. And while I agree with your initial comment about ownership, possession is 9/10’s of the law and if it’s not in your possession, it’s not really yours.

Makes sense. I’m torn on this. On one hand, we’re building something fundamentally different, but on the other, most people still need a bridge to feel comfortable using these tools. I’ve even considered adding a similar onboarding flow for nostr:npub1xxdd8eusvdxmaph3fkuu9x2mymhrcc3ghe2l38zv0l4f4nqp659qskkt7a , but I really don’t want to take on managing data, emails, or anything that turns into a custodial burden. Once that door opens, it’s hard to close again.
Honestly, I need to level up my relay management knowledge. I think there’s a huge amount of untapped potential there that could benefit nostr as a whole. The best teacher I know is nostr:npub10npj3gydmv40m70ehemmal6vsdyfl7tewgvz043g54p0x23y0s8qzztl5h and I probably need to spend more time picking his brain.
