It did not use to be like that. This has changed over the last 2 decades.
In the 80s and 90s both parties would debate hard and look for common ground.
But just read any article about a right position or a right politician and you will notice word bias that encourages this behavior. I think that is what changed.

You're right, it's a recent development. I'd say it started just over ten years ago. So much polarisation now.
I just find it strange that it seems to be only one side pushing an agenda so hard they alienate people. Everyone political has agendas. But only one side is so devout in their beliefs that they excommunicate people who don't buy into every piece of dogma.
I hear a lot about how politics is going more right, and all I can think is "people are actually surprised by this?"
