Did not know that. Literally everything I have ever read or seen on Australia (outside of cities) has been desert. Might have to see if I can find some more thorough documentaries.

The animals can be an issue, although it's overblown a bit. I nearly stepped on the world's third most venomous snake in my own yard last summer, I know the are here, but I don't see them often.
