While back in Amsterdam recently, I noticed a quiet phenomenon while using public transport: nearly every face was lit not by the sun, but by the glow of a phone. A sea of people, heads bowed, eyes drawn into glass portals of endless distraction. They were connected everywhere but not present with what was around them. It felt as if they were drowning in information, yet starving for meaning.
