So truth social has succeeded. I think some people still use Parler. That has also succeeded. I think there are a couple people still on Gab. Success?

That is such a specific use of the word success that is is practically meaningless.
success is subjective
We're not a product, we're a protocol. We don't need 50 million users to break-even. None of this stuff really costs anything...
I think it would be disngenous to say nostr is successful (so far at least).
Sure it has "successfully" shown it can make clients and work in theory (with a small userbase at least). Or whatever but that isn't how anyone would be interpreting that statement.
Nostr hasn't caught on at all, it's not even know to many people outside of bitcointwitter. It's not even fully known inside of bitcointwitter. Which is a very very small subculture within another platform. None of this makes a case for nostr being successful in any meaningful way, subjective or not.
My criteria for nostr being successful is that people post the 🫂 emoji. Nostr is successful.

I think of success of nostr in terms of it reaching people and catching their imagination in a significant number. And so far it hasn't really done that. I don't think anyone's really tried tbh.
I define success as "less than 100% of the people I say Nostr to in real life don't say 'What is Nostr?'"

I don't see nostr as a product either btw, but let's just say nostr remained at this level of usage, would you call it successful? I'm not even thinking in terms of twitter or bliesky-sozwd usage. I think it does need to attract and inspire more people tho.

Because it is a protocol, no one is even going to really know what Nostr even is when that breakout app occurs. What we’ve already seen for Bitchat and Nymchat users. Most have never even heard of Nostr beforehand.

Nothing was good enough to try. It still isn't, but we can slowly see it getting there.
Bitchat might be the exception here, I think it is possible that has reached a significant amount of people, as a brand at least.

I think unlike atprotocol and Bluesky, I think nostr is probably bigger as a brand of protocol than the nostr clients.
Which is a good thing. Imagine, if e-mail had just been a client...

Yeah I think so, bitchat had/has viral potential maybe. It seemed to resonate with people. But it is also not the sort of thing people want to use a lot. Which is fine, but it seems difficult to reach a network effect tho.
It will be more, but I think it will have a linear growth model, for a while.
You are also discounting the eye-watering sums of money that were burned through to build your "success" stories and how most of those attempts crashed and burned within years or even months. Survivorship bias.
The cost of all of this has been really measely and we are still here and finally even starting to think up business models. Until now, we were just frantically trying to figure out how to see each others' shitposts.
Time is money. We had no money, so it takes more time. Volunteer time and a shoestring budget. Even the paid devs aren't exactly winning the lottery, or something.
I agree. It’s hard to understand why Facebook is still considered a success. In many ways, it represents some of the worst outcomes of the internet era. A significant portion of its user activity feels inauthentic, and its profitability is driven largely by advertising. It’s difficult to point to anything genuinely positive about it.
Tremendous success. I get to see and interact with some of the smartest people in the world who provide extremely high signal by speaking freely, while also being some of the most clever people who make the best memes. No other place on the internet like it.
We also never have to lose that as Nostr grows. We can make a list with npubs first used before x date and could call it “Eternal August”.
