More bullshit from authoritarian sympathetic media. The vast majority of these abhorrent demographics are not using #GrapheneOS and they don't know what it is: It is hilarious that the picture attached barely shows phones that look like Pixels, with weird camera bumps, headphone jacks and colour schemes? Am I supposed to believe this? Based on what is being said, these people are still getting charged (obviously, real world crimes have far more physical evidence than digital evidence), and so what? Why even associate us like this? Why talk about an operating system like this? Where is all this press for other privacy and security operating systems? Numerous nonprofits around the world and journalists use GrapheneOS as their first choice because it keeps them safe. This kind of press trying to associate our name with crime is unacceptable, unprofessional and authoritarian. If you play by their standards: Is Snapchat or Telegram crime software because it is an open secret that drug dealers in local areas love to use it? Is Discord or Twitter a service for predators because it's so egregiously popular and their design centered around publicity makes it easy to find accounts run by vulnerable demographics?

Look at how media organisations written by those who enable police state authoritarianism attack #GrapheneOS and put our name in their mouths. Title: "Every time we see a Google Pixel, we think it could be a drug dealer." It's the perfect phone for crime for a reason." https://archive.ph/2025.07.02-161230/https://www.xatakandroid.com/sociedad/cada-vez-que-vemos-google-pixel-pensamos-que-puede-ser-narcotraficante-movil-perfecto-para-crimen-sencilla-razon# There are ongoing coordinated attempts at misleading people about GrapheneOS and Signal in multiple European countries. A consistent pattern are completely unsubstantiated claims about exploits with no evidence. These are contradicted by actual evidence, leaks and their behavior. GrapheneOS is not immune to exploitation, but the fearmongering done in these ongoing attacks on it is very clearly fabricated. They feel threatened enough by GrapheneOS to engage in coordinated attempts at convincing people that it's unable to protect their privacy and security. View quoted note →

Bullish for GrapheneOS
Content warning below As a person coming from a relevant research background, online predators seeking to control and abuse victims cannot always use high security / privacy tools or services because vulnerable demographics, mostly children, are not technically capable or knowledgeable to use them and it would leave them out of reach. The drugs trade have to work the same way. They cannot sell a product without real world interactions or engaging on mainstream social media platforms. Additionally, dark web marketplaces make up a tiny amount of drug trade - because most CUSTOMERS don't know about technologies that power it such as Tor or Cryptocurrencies, and when they do, they use it in a way that compromises their opsec. Your 20 year old college student just wants to pop pills and snort lines without doing all these steps. Do you know Twitter, even long before Elon Musk's tenure, had been a hub for vulnerable demographics posting pro-eating disorder, self harm or other NSFW content, including by minors? https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0747563222003399 In 2022, Rutgers University's Network Contaigon Research Institute reported self harm and suicide keywords and hashtags spiked up by 500%, many posted by people under eighteen, and evidence suggested that online predators engage with such communities? Not linking here due to extremely gorey content and imagery in the paper, but it's easily searchable should you need to be curious. This harm is far more documented than any harm caused by GrapheneOS. And without GrapheneOS this would not have stopped anything. We are a net good in the world. Such people need GrapheneOS and online privacy more than anybody - and they need to be helped. This is how online privacy and security protects you from crime, by keeping you out of reach from the criminal actors and predators who enable vulnerable demographics to continue destructive behaviour. Less violent crime often happens because of struggle, misery and desperation. Governments are at fault for high crime society and bad upbringing and education is at fault for leading people down a path of destructive behaviour.

sadly, most journalists are whores. If you only write what the powerful want to be written you don’t need privacy that much

Going against government narative the last few years by doing the complete opposite to what was advised, got people safer, healthier and less poor and waaay better informed. Common sense should become the standard again, because it has become quite scarce. But only if one wants to survive the obvious -op. Keep fighting for what is yours and keep it yours.
Agreed and yes, common sense is as scarce as Bitcoin these days. People are to preoccupied with whatever the media is feeding them. Migrants, LMQRTXTY-whatever those tags are, woke bla etc etc. But it works, we keep fighting each other.
Some contributors are pseudonymous. The choice for a developer or mod to be is on them. You can't really reverse what you put online about yourself. I can't just disappear and "go anon", and especially not hide at a nation state level. GrapheneOS has been around over a decade and has public founders and people involved for an extremely long time... I had been around since previous namings. Because of the nature of things like a non-profit foundation, there has to be incorporated directors registered with authorities. Being a mod you wouldn't get much disruption from me if I just had to decide to pack things up. This isn't all bad as we have a position of trust and accountability, unlike proprietary mobile 'security' projects ran by unknown individuals that get seized by LE for ACTUALLY enabling or being involved in crimes i.e. EncroChat. Seeing what we're up to is helpful.
Multiple project members have been threatened or been victims with acts of violence i.e. swatting and violent phone calls, and sometimes we stepped in when other projects was known to recieve them. DivestOS didn't receive them at such a level as us, but the hostile environment made their sole developer quit working on it. These aren't performed by authorities but bitter external parties.

Migrants, Abortion, Vaccinations, Health"care", Drugs, Racism, Wokeism... All endless (civil) wars created by government, designed to never be solved to keep justifying/forcing their existence and the stealing through taxation and money printing. One has to pay to be stolen from, otherwise you go to prison where you're forced cheap labour again. The house always wins... Unless you've seen the light (and this can't be unseen) and no longer CHOOSE to participate (because most of us are ALLOWING this all to continue, but are simply unaware that we do so) There is a way out of this system of fake worries that obfuscate and prevent the real issues from entering the public conversation at large. Like a gov mafia or cancer will keep fighting for its existence, so can the person who does not want to lose his/her freedom ever again. DYOR: study money, study food/health, study politically incorrect history, study survival. And then practice and apply the knowledge. Take all the responsibilities you're ABLE to carry and make them your own. No third party risk! Then you'll find yourself no longer scared and need to be told what to know, think or care about. One self should be the person to care about. All excess can be given to others (family, friends, others). No building stands tall without a solid foundation. One of the toughest things will remain; the unlearning of most of what we've been told all our lives and now think we know for sure are so. When challenged we know quite little and most of what we know is incorrect. With the right mindset and humility this can be overcome IF the will is there to learn facts to bring one closer to the inconvenient truths... And only then proper actions can be taken to improve one's situation. The people who remain falling for the "government's intention" game, and stay lazy, will be among those planned to fail and be in the end robbed of all.

That's a lot of words, and I think you chose weird examples, but that's dedinitely true. Criminals and predators depend enormously on their victims' choices. Imagine this: how could society ever stop a serial killer if his victims left their phones at home, drove themselves out into the middle of the desert and then stepped out into an already dug grave? You can give the police and law enforcement all the tools and training and resources you can think of, but none of it compares to putting power kn the hands of the would-be victims. A victim always has the ability to prevent their own crime. It isn't always easy for them, but there is always a way. That's where their rights come from in the first place. So many great tools and technologies out there exist that can make it easier for victims to avoid being victimized, to lower the cost. Developing these tools, distributing these tools to would-be victims, and training would-be victims to use these tools should be the highest priorities of anyone wishing to fight evil in this world.
Well the why is obvious, no? To associate privacy with criminality, and condition the sheep to remain transparent, and to add peer pressure against encryption and secure computing, so that the surveillance state might live to control the masses. That criminals use #GrapheneOS is about as interesting an observation as that darknet markets run on #monero Of course they do. Those are the tools that work, and these people operate in an extreme environment where their liberty, lifestyle and profits are on the line if the tools are not as good as they think. That is a legitimate claim grounded in empirical fact. But that is very different than what the Statist authoritarians put out there, which goes more like "only criminals use such tools and their access must be restricted or the effectiveness of the tools somehow compromised". And that is about as smart as saying we should ban knives because some people like to go on stabbing sprees every so often. The vast, vast majority of GrapheneOS users are just normal people who understand why they need GrapheneOS. Don't let this slandering get to you, and keep up the good work 🔐
They may be strange or unique examples, but they're subjects I have unfortunately had to come across in some way or another in research settings and I would rather speak from experience. They're also the ones that hit and hurt the most for me when I think about them too, I suppose.
