#TIL that in portugal, you can buy supplement tablets containing tryptophan. found one with 25mg per capsule today. gonna be taking it. it also has tyrosine in it, so despite the advice on the pack i don't think it wise to take it sooner than about 2 hours before going to bed (if you want to remember dreams, 500mg of tyrosine will see you wake up in the middle of REM cycles).

you also left out the context of what was being debunked? what i said about tyrosine? because i literally have done this twice, phenylalanine does it too. when there is a large amount of free amino acids in the blood, it stimulates conversion into the neurotransmitters that are made from them. dopamine, adrenalin, noradrenalin. yes, in the brain is 1 and 3 and in the adrenal glands is 2.
the thing about tryptophan is entirely different. they literally took it off the OTC market in australia as Prozac was introduced. tryptophan is an essential nutrient, and depression and related psychological disturbances are caused by deficiency.
also note that chicken and pig both have high levels of these large, catecholamine precursor amino acids. beef, turkey and salmon have high natural levels of tryptophan. meats that are low in catecholamine precursors or high in tryptophan are ok to eat before bed, in moderate amounts. pig and chicken will ruin your sleep.
I was the arguing, i just watched that episode and I thought id share it.
I love Huberman’s sleep protocol too.
He gets super in the weeds in his podcasts but you can just search up his recommended supplements
Magnesium, GABA, theanine ashwaganda, apigenin.
