Based on the number of people defending Core, I suppose not. If there's one thing I've learned from Bitcoin, it's that all human behavior is driven by incentives. The devs apparently stand to profit greatly (in fiat) from these changes. The plebs defending them, at their own destruction, are mere sheep who follow their team uncritically.
