About 85% of nostr's relay network is now offline. We are down to about only 10 relays that are still working well. This number could go either way in the next year, up to 20, or down to 5. There are competing forces of centralization, decenralization and trickle down economics at play. I hope more people run relays and the network gets more support. image

I think this is really the issue, there are a lot of relays online but usage is concentrated around a few big ones. Most newcomers to Nostr probably just stick with the default relays that their chosen client is set up with and never really consider what relays to use.
It works and we’ve seen big relays go away or get nuked without any major issues but I think it could still make sense to have more quality relays and have notes a bit more distributed across them than we have now.
Not much. Depends how much it's used. Could be as little as $30 in the cloud, or $5 at home. It would go up a bit if it becomes a major relay. Biggest cost by far is developer time.

Perhaps Nostr clients need to become micro relays.
