I've always said the key to breaking a bad habit or addiction is convincing yourself you don't want or need whatever the thing is. But you have to actively be aware of the addiction to do that. Addiction is a battle of wills, yours versus your "demon's".

I don’t think you need to convince yourself, but rather hold a lot of awareness and compassion as you run the pattern out until you genuinely see that you don’t actually want the thing. Then you decide. You don’t need force to willpower your way out of it.
