Adding to that discussion: Isn’t the “simplicity” of the Nostr apps actually what the usual target user looks for?
Every time I see discussions about having shorts or stories or how to advertise using zaps on Nostr, I ask myself if by imitating those features we’re not dragging ourselves back to the noise and addiction that made many of us leave legacy social media?
I thought freedom tech was more aligned with low-time preference…

Our target users are everyone. We’re not free til we’re all free. Legacy social apps are easy to hate on but they’re also successful for many good reasons.
Hi Eric, thanks for replying. I agree that freedom tech should be available for everyone. But I disagree about the target user, because I think most people with a fiat mentality will not adhere to freedom tech because freedom means self-sovereignty and many are just comfortable with giving away their freedom and their privacy for easy distraction. We call it attention economy for a reason. I don’t (completely) hate on legacy social media, but I think its success metrics are very different from the success freedom seekers are looking for. But each to their opinion. Time will tell. Keep building!
Thanks for the sentiment. Remember everyone had a “fiat” mentality once. We’re born with short time preferences. We teach / coax / help each other to get out of it and pursue something better. Software is a beautiful way to do that. You gotta meet them where they are at
For me the main thing with the nostr apps is the freedom of choice I get. One dev will implement stupid reels to his app and a different one will keep his app simple. I can switch to a different client or ask the creator of my favourite client to make the controversial feature optional, etc.
Definitely a good point. Having no business or team behind it and thus being able to ask the creators directly for enabling disabling features is significant.
Also that you can choose another client or use various ones simultaneously without losing your network and your notes is the real beauty of the protocol.
