TEN YEARS AGO SECURE BITCOIN COLD STORAGE WAS DIFFICULT. FIVE YEARS AGO SECURE BITCOIN MULTISIG WAS DIFFICULT. BOTH ARE INCREDIBLY EASY NOW AND USERS TAKE IT FOR GRANTED. IT IS HARD TO IMAGINE A WORLD WITHOUT EITHER. NOSTR IS YOUNG. KEY SECURITY WILL BECOME EASIER AND MORE ROBUST SOON. THEN WE WILL ALL TAKE IT FOR GRANTED WHEN ANY INDIVIDUAL, COMPANY, OR GOVERNMENT CAN USE MULTI DEVICE COLD KEYS TO BROADCAST TO THE GLOBE WITHOUT PERMISSION.

The future is looking brighter each day. 🫡 Let’s keep pushing forward and support the developers how ever each of us can.

my favorite part: without permission
Until then, most need to understand that their Nostr key is plausibly already compromised, and they should use it accordingly.
Multi-sig, available through a mature institution like Unchained drove a 10x increase in my allocation to BTC. Difficult to understand how important stuff like this is to Gen X and older. I’m not an ETF guy, but I understand how non-technical, non-rebels use this as an entry vehicle.

Good reminder. I think part of the ease is experience. Don't forget to have patience with noobies. Things are 💯 easier than a few years ago, but that doesn't mean it isn't a huge mind fuck to control your own money
The future is inevitable when freedom and innovation align. Just as multisig and cold storage evolved from challenges into second nature, Nostr will follow. Soon, seamless key management will feel obvious, and permissionless global communication will be the new norm. We’re living the transition, what a time to be building! 🫂💜
What is the best option for bitcoin custody within a trust for my family? I just keep our longterm stack on a Coldcard with the keys in safety deposit box stamped on steel but wonder if thats the best option to include within a trust?
SAFE DEPOSIT BOXES ARE NOT SAFE. THEY OFTEN GET DRILLED. IF YOU MUST USE A SAFE DEPOSIT BOX KEEP A COLDCARD IN THERE RATHER THAN STEEL PLATE SO IT IS PROTECTED BY A PIN AT LEAST. OR USE A PASSPHRASE. OR USE MULTISIG. BUT IN ALL SITUATIONS ASSUME THE SAFE DEPOSIT BOX WILL BE COMPROMISED AND MITIGATE THAT RISK. AS FOR TRUST SETUP, I LIKE MULTISIG BEST. GIVES YOU A LOT OF FLEXIBILITY. EX: YOU HOLD TWO KEYS, HEIR HOLDS ONE, LAWYER HOLDS ONE - HEIR AND LAWYER WOULD HAVE TO COLLUDE TO SPEND FUNDS - IF BOTH LOSE KEYS YOU CAN STILL MOVE FUNDS.

Living in the future is such a thrill!
I would use SEED XOR and keep one copy with a family member or at a second deposit box. Also male sure you put the steel plates in tamper evident bags; otherwise, you won’t know if the seed phrase has been compromised. If you want a KYC free option for multisig, nunchuk has a great product with inheritance planning that you can also manage through Sparrow if you like that interface better.
Collaborative vs DIY is a better framing If you are unsure about which way to go then do collaborative multisig
My girlfriend was struggling with me living bitcoin. She had a small amount of bitcoin on an exchange just to keep me quiet about it. I told her she needs her own wallet. She never understood why. Slowly after a year she got around to it, but the hassle was too much and the price tag too high for her. So I kept a wallet in my desk for the day she would ask me to help her set one up. That note today was the reason she asked me to help her. I am proud to say that my girl now has her own wallet and her own bitcoin! She is now one of us! Thank you @ODELL! View quoted note →

Unchained…..multi-sig made super easy.🙏
Good point on the tamper evident bags. Any recs on good quality ones from reputable source? I assume they are opaque and not transparent too. I like the SDB route but I think Odell has a good point about keeping the steel at home and putting the CC in the box. Ill do that this coming week.

Suggestions on multisig? How about splitting the seed into two safe deposit boxes as different institutions?
The ones from coinkite are nice because they are sized for their steel plates, but they are pricey. Amazon has good options, and yes get opaque ones. Yeah ideally you would keep a hardware wallet in the security box. You can still put a seed phrase in there if needed if you SEED XOR the seed phrase and use tamper evident bags.
Making multisig even easier

Is SEED XOR difficult to setup already having the wallet established within CC? Ill be honest, always nervous messing with my wallet settings after having everything setup, validated, tested and re-tested.
No, it’s really simple. There are resources from coinkite and BTC Sessions, but it’s a simple process. SEED XOR doesn’t change any settings within your CC or private key. You’re just creating/deriving a multi piece seed phrase from the original seed phrase.

If I am new to these, where should I go to learn?

Nevermind, reading the other replies helps.
