In ancient China, during the Spring and Autumn period, there was a wise minister named Ziwen in the state of Chu. He was appointed prime minister three times but showed no joy or pride each time. Similarly, he was dismissed three times without any resentment or anger. He always dutifully handed over the state accounts to his successor, remaining loyal and unchanged.
When asked why he acted in such a detached manner, he replied: "well, if the glory belongs to the position and not to me, there is no reason for me to become vain, for it is not mine. If the glory belongs to me and not to the position, there is no reason for the position to make me vain, for the glory will be in me regardless of the position".
