Playing unlicensed music in your podcast is illegal.
However, playing "Value for Value" music in your podcast is fair game because listeners can pay the artist directly - in Bitcoin.

Copyrights should have limits
If the podcast creator doesn’t reward the music creators directly v4v style, just shifts that to its listeners, the podcast creator expect to receive v4v but not give it.

I think the real takeaway from this story is that having thousands of podcasts spread out on thousands of servers hosted by thousands of people all over the world is nearly impossible to "police"
Having thousands of podcast hosted on a handful of servers hosted by one company can easily be crushed.
If you are a podcaster or musician please consider self hosting, It's not that hard to do.
if you include a method for boosting the artist whose music you are using, any licences should be void.
