Is this whole thing a layer on-top of VMs/containers for SATs? I still think there is value in having super generic machines that users can run whatever they want on...

This is specifically a job-based approach with pre-installed software & optimizations. I think it's a fundamentally different use-case than renting the long-running compute you seem to refer to.
