# Will we enter Hell because we celebrated the Prophet’s birthday?
honestly, today I will not repeat what we hear every year about the proofs that the Mawlid celebration is innovation [bid'aah] like that none of the righteous predecessors [Al-salaf] ever practiced it, and that the scholars themselves did not even know the exact date of the Prophet’s ﷺ birth and there are multiple conflicting opinions in his birthdate, and that we have no single authentic proof for the precise day in Rabiʿ al-Awwal month when he was born, and all other well-known evidences.
But today I want to respond to two emotional arguments that the innovators use regarding the Mawlid:
# First Argument: How can our love for the Prophet ﷺ and celebrating him be a cause for entering Hell?
The answer is that love for the Prophet ﷺ is indeed a righteous deed, and no Muslim doubts that. However, this is an emotional and deceptive question meant to mislead Muslims. The sin is not because you love the Messenger, but because you introduce a religious innovation that Allah and His Messenger did not legislate. That, in itself, is disobedience to the Prophet. True love is shown through following, not through innovating.
Even al-Sakhawi, an Ashʿari scholar who considered the Mawlid celebration permissible, admitted that no one from the early generations of Muslims ever practiced it, saying: “None of the Salaf in the first three centuries ever did it. It was introduced afterwards.” [al-Sira al-Halabiyya]
This is similar to what Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib رحمه الله—one of the great Salaf—did when he saw a man repeating extra bowings after Fajr. He forbade him. The man said: “O Abu Muhammad, will Allah punish me for praying?” Ibn al-Musayyib replied: “No, but He will punish you for going against the Sunnah.” [Musannaf ʿAbd al-Razzaq]
