Destiny 1 was a purchase but was considered mmo territory so was applauded for not having monthly subscriptions, few DLCs came out and you bought em.
Destiny 2 was also a purchase on release but I think a different game studio took over, might have been 343 games but prob wrong. Anyways D2 was also decent but felt like more of D1. Every DLC in D2 was pay for on release but i think over time they became free as new expansions came out which dwarfed the items you had earned.
Still there is team deathmatch and proper multiplayer pvp modes and the level of your gun means nothing as everything gets balanced I think. Or at least used to be.
Story in Destiny 2 and its fun cinematic-like gameplay as a coop FPS is pretty hard to find these days I feel. It has a certain style I guess and people seem to dig it
