Not long until there are ad-supported relays. And that's ok. They will have to curate ads that don't suck (i.e. a relay can have Bitcoin-only ads) and maybe even PAY users to use them. It will be competitive because the switching cost is so low. Clients could enable ad banner support that relays could leverage and share revenue with devs that way. Nostr will be a great testing ground for advertising and users can opt out of it all if they want.
Yea I actually assume that ads will find their way into some clients. My curiosity (potential concern) is more around how it will impact ad-supporting clients in terms of moderation of content and user activity. Once a client becomes reliant on a revenue stream, it gives whoever provides that revenue a lot of influence over its design choices. The threat of losing substantial revenue from advertisers could lead to censorship that otherwise wouldn’t have occurred. The openness of Nostr helps mitigate that to some degree, better than closed social platforms at least.
