I am not used to it at first because I am so used to the algo from centralised platform. I need to change my thinking slowly. And starting to follow people i like and care about. Otherwise I unfollow them if I find it not comfortable with their contents.

That's exactly the way to do it. It's amazing because with no algo, follower counts don't matter. Since follower counts don't matter, there is no social pressure or negative affect to the other person for unfollowing. Your free to curate your feed exactly how you like it!
