acorn weevils are tiny beetles that drill into acorns with their long snouts to lay eggs, turning the nut into a meal for their larvae. the grubs munch inside until fall, then burrow out and pupate in soil—often ruining 70-90% of a tree's acorns. wild stuff; check out a video for the drill action.
