This definitely runs counter to my usual privacy stuff that I post here, but...but what happened to caller ID?
Back when everyone had landlines in the 90s and into the early 2000s, caller ID was such a common thing and was really helpful too. It helped us know whether to pick up a number.
Now, if someone isn't in your mobile's phone book, then it's just another unknown number. Have we gone backwards?

For a bit of fun, tack on Syriac, Coptic, Church Slavonic, and maybe even Classical Armenian!

@Soapbox I ran into some errors this morning when posting via ditto.pub. The notes would initially go through when I clicked 'post', but then they'd just sit there greyed out. Eventually, a little error box would pop up, and the note wouldn't go through.
I encountered similar problems when reacting/liking to others' notes or when trying to reply.
For context, I'm accessing ditto from my desktop, using the most up-to-date Brave browser. Feel free to DM if you need any other specifics.
Am I alone in thinking that our 'freedom tech' community tends to be rather focused on developing mobile-based tech? Don't get me wrong. I love having Amber, Voyage, and similar apps on my phone.
However, it would be great to have greater access to freedom tools on my desktop computer too, as I spend even more of my time here. Will we ever have a desktop equivalent of the Zapstore, where we can find FOSS tools that we can trust for desktop?

Can anyone recommend some actually private VPN options that I could use later this year whilst in #China? I need something that isn't a honeypot but will also get me through the Great Chinese Firewall.

I'm maybe only 20-30 minutes into @npub16p7u...cmt7's first episode on psychopathic rulers, but he does a great job of distinguishing between psychopathy and psychosis. I'll definitely finish this episode and the follow-up he's released just recently.
However, I thought those interested in such topics might enjoy a few other, related books that I'm currently working through:
1. 5 Types of People Who Can Ruin Your Life
Bill Eddy, a social worker, defines what Narcissists and Sociopaths are and goes on to explain his own category of 'High-Conflict Personalities'. He's built something of a career on defining this HCP category and teaching others how to deal with them
2. The Sociopath Next Door
Dr. Martha Stout expertly weaves her teachings on sociopathy with vivid, living examples of who sociopaths are and what they do.
I've not finished either yet, but I think both works help to give us a clear image of the types of people we're dealing with on a daily basis, particularly those in leadership (whether in business or in government).

It's almost Lunar New Year!
Any exciting #Bitcoin, #Monero, or #Nostr themed activities planned?

Has anyone yet tried to build a browser plugin (for desktop) that would allow us to import an article in a Nostr-friendly format to the client of our choosing?
I'd love to republish things, both to share and to back things up for the future when they're inevitably pulled down by the powers that be.

#Siamstr, I heard you recently had an election in #Thailand.
Were the results favorable to Bitcoin and freedom technologies?
For the last number of days, I've been having problems with #NewPipe. It's either said that the content I'm trying to access is unavailable or that my IP is blocked and that I should consider turning off my VPN. I checked to see if any new updates had dropped, but alas no!
Last night, I finally saw that updates had landed. Problem. Solved.
Well done, NewPipe team!
I was sent this video clip about cashless tools for tourists in #Thailand. It looks like they're really pushing this for everyone now.
How much longer will cash survive in Thailand and, by extension, the rest of #SoutheastAsia?

@Maple AI Out of curiosity, what does 'Generous usage for power users' constitute in your Pro tier?
What's the best FOSS voice-to-text software out there? A colleague wants to take more voice memos and then have the software transcribe them as accurately as possible. Desktop options preferred, but mobile is okay.

What will they come up with next? View quoted note →
I'm in #Bangkok at present, and I'm seeing quite a number of cashless shops in the malls here, and so many people are voluntarily paying with QR codes elsewhere. It's definitely growing.
We have our work cut out for us.

Just posting to say how much I love using Voyage on mobile and am hoping that @dluvian will eventually launch a web-based version.
In the next few months, I'm thinking about picking up a 'clunker' of a refurbished laptop to use for work (and Nostr, of course).
The plan is to use it mostly for doing web-based tasks, but it wouldn't hurt to have a decent-sized SSD in case for the odd software I want to mess around with.
I see a lot of YouTubers and bloggers mentioning the ThinkPad T480 as the last 'best' machine. Any validity to that? Any other sturdy machines that I could use for day-to-day email, report writing, etc.?
Oh, one last thing: I intend to use Mint, Ubuntu, or something similar.

I turned off my VPN for the first time in forever to test something and forgot to switch it back on.
However, I finally caught it when I tried to go to Archive.today, only to find that my local ISP had blocked the site, claiming it was some kind of scam site. This is the first time I've ever encountered such a warning from my ISP, which goes to show that it really does pay to have a VPN. Who is my ISP to tell me whether I can use an alternative archiving site or not?!
