If the British Labour Party is worried about Reform UK winning a majority at the next general election, they should prevent that by introducing proportional representation. It's true that PR wasn't in their manifesto, but they can make it legitimate by winning majority support in a referendum.
It's also true that they might lose the referendum, but I think there is a majority for PR, when you add together left-wingers worried about Reform UK, Tories worried about the electoral obliteration of their party, and people who have a settled preference for PR.

A recent long article¹ from RTÉ News says:
“the current government shutdown may tip sentiment against them [the Republicans] as northern Virginia is home to the greatest concentration of federal government employees, who are either furloughed, fired or working without pay”
This is a good example of why RTÉ is not to be trusted on American news. The shutdown is the Democrats' fault, because they have repeatedly voted against a Continuing Resolution.

RTÉ News has a story¹ today about an “Irish choreographer” who is “severing ties” with Sadler’s Wells Theatre because of its links with Israel. What I find interesting is the indirectness of the relationship between the theatre and Israel:

• provides financial services to arms manufacturers, which...
• sell arms to the IDF.

There isn't necessarily anything wrong with a white person painting his face black or brown to look like a person of another race. What matters is what he does in his disguise.
Councils should coordinate with each other to nominate a presidential candidate. It's no use if two councils nominate Candidate A and two other councils nominate Candidate B.

The Irish Times quotes¹ “a spokeswoman for the Houses of the Oireachtas” as saying:
“As the first female speaker of Dáil Éireann, the Ceann Comhairle was proud that Dáil Éireann could finally be represented at and available to contribute to the Summit of Women Speakers. It should also be noted that in its final declaration the women speakers voiced their solidarity with all women and girls living in conflict zones and raised concerns about the disproportionate risks they face during wars.”

Back in March, William Reville wrote in the Irish Times as follows:
“Very few think women who have grown accustomed to having one or no children will ever return to a higher birth rate. But, I believe this mindset could be changed by making changes to ensure the division of labour necessary to care for and raise children from birth onwards is divided strictly evenly between fathers and mothers.”
He doesn't say whether he has legislation in mind, but if legislation were enacted to try to achieve this equal division of labour:
1. Enforcement would probably be highly intrusive.
2. Some men, not wishing to engage in child-rearing, would opt out of fathering children. The net effect might be a further decrease in birth rates.
In the trial for the murder of Aaron Keating in 2023, the judge has passed a disgracefully lenient sentence. Here are some details from RTÉ News¹:
”A teenager who stabbed a man to death [...] has been jailed for 13 years.
[...]
The now-19 year-old was one month short of his 18th birthday when he murdered Mr Keating on 13 June 2023 at Main Street, Ongar, Dublin 15.
[...]
CCTV footage showed an altercation between Mr Keating and the defendant which prompted the youth to run to a nearby stairwell where he had stashed a knife for self-protection.
He returned within 90 seconds of the first altercation and pursued Mr Keating across the road despite one of his friends telling him to stop.
The defendant attempted to stab Mr Keating but missed before he "made another lunge", the judge said, causing the fatal wound to the abdomen.
[...]
The defendant fled the scene, disposed of the knife and made no attempt to assist the dying man, the judge said.”

Here's an interesting passage from an article¹ published today in the Daily Telegraph:
[start of quote]
Reform UK has declared war on net zero developments in the countryside.
Richard Tice, Reform’s deputy leader, said the party will use its new control of ten councils to use “every lever” available to block renewable projects.
The Telegraph can reveal that Mr Tice will write to potential developers in Lincolnshire projects following Reform’s historic local election victories on Friday.
He said: “I’m now going to write again to them, saying now that we’ve won these elections, you need to be under no illusion. This is war. We will wage war against you people and your terrible ideas.
“If you think that you’re going to do this in the county of Lincolnshire, you are going to regret it. You’re going to waste your money.
“It’s going to be very painful financially, so you might as well take your money and your daft ideas elsewhere.”
The MP for Boston and Skegness added: “Whether it’s planning blockages, whether it’s judicial reviews, whether it’s lawsuits, whether it’s health and safety notices, we will use every available legal measure to an extreme way in order to frustrate these people.”
