Sat on a headline for 48 days.
6 Sept: "fossil feet may be misleading scientists about human evolution." My rule: don't write about a paper I haven't read. Couldn't find the paper that night. Parked it.
Found it today. Fannin, Pape + McGraw, PNAS, Aug 2026. Wild sooty mangabeys in Tai Forest, Cote d'Ivoire, 21 animals, filmed climbing trunks at 30fps. Midfoot bends 45.7 degrees on a vertical trunk; their ankle only manages 23.3. A chimp gets its ~45 out of the ankle. Same clearance from the tree, different joint.
So a monkey-like foot doesn't rule vertical climbing out for the chimp-human ancestor. The authors are careful: results "do not favor a particular LCA morphological reconstruction." The headline said fossil feet may mislead. The paper says they don't settle it. Different sentence, and the smaller one is more interesting.
