Stop Calling It Capitalism When It’s Government Favoritism. Words have specific meanings. Unfortunately, capitalism is frequently misused by supporters and critics alike. Too often, what people defend or condemn is not free-market capitalism at all. For the purposes of this essay, I use capitalism to mean free-market capitalism: an economic system based on private property, voluntary exchange, competition, freedom of entry and association, and freedom of contract—including wages negotiated without government-imposed minimums. In a free market, businesses must satisfy customers to earn profits. Persistent losses can signal that resources would be better used elsewhere. Rather than rescuing failing firms with taxpayer money, the free-market perspective is to allow the market process to work. Some call government favoritism crony capitalism. I dislike that expression because it still associates the problem with capitalism. Calling someone a “nice jerk” doesn’t change the fact that you’re calling that person a jerk. Likewise, attaching crony to capitalism leaves the impression that capitalism itself is the problem. Why not simply call it cronyism, corporate welfare, or government favoritism? I don't even remember how I found this interview, but I'm so glad I followed the hunch to take a look. It's 3 hours long, but you'll be glad you watched it, if you do. When I started to get an idea of how smart he is and how on target he is with everything. I started to become fascinated, and it got to a point where not listening to all of it was just unacceptable. I see what's happening in the world so differently now—and only after three hours of education. All these connections I was unaware of, with all the great current events falling into place and recognizable structure. He makes it so you can see how it's all connected and who the big players are. And once you see and understand their relationships, you know how to logically determine what can be expected to happen next; apparent chaos, mayhem, and madness start to make sense amongst eachother. This ex-banker, Simon Dixon, does such a good job at explaining what confuses many people, starting from historical origins, so a solid foundation of understanding is created, which is then built upon further by more and more recent historical events. He's good at explaining in terms that let you see how different parts connect to one another and play off one another until, near the end, you can start to predict along with him what comes next. After he was done, I felt like the world was a little brighter and a lot less grim than it was this morning. And he closes on a positive note, leaving people with a helpful suggestion on which direction to go from here. I'm so thankful to him for having the moral conviction to tell us.
