How many relationship problems develop as a result of the “men are visual, women are relational” trope? The trope assumes that the only sexual arousal pathway available to men is visual stimulation by the sight of a “hot” female body. The idea is heavily promoted in evangelical Christian circles, but I’m not sure how common it is outside of that. The actual reality is that both men and women use (or at least have available) multiple arousal pathways. Men are slightly more visual on average, but individual differences matter more than gender averages. Has anyone else run into the “men are visual” idea? Helpful or harmful?

This post is in response to Laser, who just nuked his account and started a new one that I have yet to find. As a former reformed Baptist myself, I can deeply appreciate the consistency and conviction with which you are approaching this. If Calvin’s position on icons is correct, then you are doing the right thing. However, Calvin is objectively and provably not correct. Ultimately the Holy Fathers of the 7th ecumenical council were articulating the faith “once delivered to the saints” when they ruled for the veneration of icons. The basic idea that “veneration of the image passes to the prototype” is a key lynchpin of both trinitarian theology and Christian ethics. That concept underlines how the commandment to love God and love neighbor are not in conflict. We show our love for God by honoring each image of God around us. St. John says: “If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?” (1 John 4:20) The underlying logic that St. John uses is the theology of the icon: by loving the image (ikon) we see, we honor the unseen one who is imaged. In other words, “what you have done to the least of these, you have done to me” as Christ says. The action or honor given to the ikon (the human being made in the image of God) passes to the prototype: Christ. Without this concept, all Christian ethics and morality fails. My wife keeps sharing with me what her friends in their 40s encounter in the dating world. Some of these women I know as well and I respect. I just have a hard time believing that so many shallow men exist and that decent ones are so hard to find. Probably selection bias on my part because all my friends are decent men, but most of them happen to still be married to the wife of their youth so they are off the market. A lot of these 40-something men are really put off by the fact that the women already have kids. That attitude makes sense in your 20s, but in your 40s? Most decent women already have kids by then, because tick-tock. I don’t get it. And a lot of them say that they don’t want to get married but they want all the qualities of a tradwife. So basically a trad-concubine. Then they are confused or angry when the woman isn’t on board with that. I know I’m just getting one side of the story, but WTF? Is our culture that screwed up?

I don’t like wearing clothes. It’s a sensory thing, makes my skin feel like a mild sunburn when I put them on. After a bit the sensation fades to background noise, but I think it impacts my mood subconsciously. My company recently switched to full back to the office after years of partial work from home. I love my job, but I hate getting dressed every day. Anyone else feel that way?
