Facing the threat of censorship in Brazil, we try keep our voices heard!
ESCAPING CENSORSHIP IN BRAZIL This case is a good example of what we are living in Brazil. Please, look for information outside the mainstream media. If you know a Brazilian, ask them about what is going on here. Last year a judge was banned from all mainstream social media platforms, the reason? She had a different opinion about the state of injustice we are living in. Among her arguments, one of the most famous is that our justice system works in favor of the criminals instead of the society. Also, she had a different opinion on the lockdowns during the COVID-19 time. Early this year, she was dismissed as a judge for the same reason she was banned from social media, showing that media judgment is more effective and has a great influence on the state. This week she announced she is coming back online through the Locals platform. She would be a great addition to the #Nostr community. I’ll try to make contact to bring her to our side! #grownostr #nocensorship #helpbrazil #democracy
JANUARY 08 - THE BRAZILIAN VERSION OF THE JANUARY 06 INCIDENT! I don’t know how many of the international audience are aware of what happened on January 08 2023 at the Brazilian Capital. Simply explaining, was somewhat similar to what happened at the US Capitol on January 06, 2020. A great number of people gathered in front of the government buildings to protest against the newly elected president when shit happened, or was made to look like it did! This week started the trials of those accused of attempting against democracy on that fateful day! That, by itself, is a sign that something isn’t right. Anyone familiar with Brazilian justice knows that a case to get to the point of going to trial takes years! It has passed only 8 months. In addition, it went straight to the Supreme Court! The defendants have no one else to appeal if the sentence is in their disfavor, and for sure it will be. This whole circus is being sold as a fight for democracy! I argue: Is there any democracy left to fight for? From what I see, the Brazilian democracy is far gone! #grownostr #nocensorship #helpbrazil #democracy
I've been busy the last couple of months, and was able to keep up with the strange news from Brazil, there was many. Next week I'll try to compile the most relevant news from the time I was away.
#zapraiser Helper write an article about Brazilian politics. The objective is to give international audience a backup on the path led Brazil to the point where it stands. I'll bring some historical context and highlight the main events that happened in our young democracy. #grownostr
WILDFIRE – WHAT IS THE DEAL? This week we are seeing news about the wildfires in Canada and the problems brought to the US by the smoke. For the past four years, at least here in Brazil, we have been flooded with news of the “wildfires of the Amazon Forest” and I believe most of the developed world got some of that news. Even Hollywood actors stepped in for the cause. There is no problem in reporting the fires and raising awareness of the issue, the problem is the partiality it brings. They forget to mention that, like the wildfires in Canada and even the US, they a seasonal. Like most of the places on Earth Brazil also has a wet and dry season. As we all know, when the weather is dry the vegetation is prone to ignite and spread the fire. Another common misinformation is that the fires happen in the middle of the forest which is wet (rain forest) it happens on the edges and mostly in the “Cerrado” area as can be seen in the map below. image The conclusion I get is that’s ok to report and be aware, but don’t treat it like it’s the end of the world. It’s not! Yes, some animals get caught in the fires but that’s how nature works. It’s a natural process of renovation and fertilization of the soil. July to October is the dry season in Brazil, you will start to see news about wildfires, take it with a grain of salt, that’s no big deal! For full disclosure, this is, by no means a scientific statement, it’s purely an opinion based on observation. If it resonates in your mind, please help spread the word to the international audience. traditional media don’t give the deserved importance to what is happening, and when it does seem they are on the wrong side. #grownostr #nocensorship #helpbrazil #wildfire #amazonforest
UNJUST JUSTICE-PART 2 Early this year a new judge was put in charge of the “Lava Jato” investigation that was responsible for uncovering the largest corruption scheme in Brazilian history, and we are used to corruption. Many questions were asked about his nomination, for he is publicly in favor of Brazil’s current president, who was the main target of the investigation, putting in check his impartiality as expected from a judge. A few days ago, though, he was discharged from his functions and might be arrested, depending on the evidence for threatening another judge’s son. In moments like this, we realize that the balance of power, that makes a democracy strong, is completely shifted. In the next post, I’ll make a reflection on Brazilian democracy, so outsiders can have a better understanding of how Brazil works. Please, help spread the word to the international audience. Traditional media don’t give the deserved importance to what is happening, and when it does seems they are on the wrong side. #grownostr #nocensorship #helpbrazil #democracy
WE ARE LOST! This week, the Brazilian president, Lula, nominated his lawyer for a chair at the Supreme Court! That is what happens here! For worse, it seems the Senate, which has to approve the name will give it a go!!! Please, help spread the word, to the international audience. Traditional media don’t give the deserved importance to what is happening, and when it does, appears they are on the wrong side. https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/brazils-lula-appoint-zanin-supreme-court-says-senate-head-2023-06-01/ #grownostr #nocensorship #helpbrazil
#zapathon Please, help spread the word, to the international audience. Traditional media don’t give the deserved importance to what is happening, and when it does, appears they are on the wrong side. #grownostr #nocensorship #helpbrazil
BRAZIL IS A DICTATORSHIP Last week the Brazilian government hosted a meeting for the South American leaders. That's no big deal it's expected of the biggest economy in the region to do so. The problem was the treatment given to Nicolas Maduro, dictator of Venezuela. He arrived a couple of days before the meeting and received a full honor reception. That's not all! The Brazilian president, Lula, defended the Maduro regime, stating that it is a democracy and that the world is being unfair towards them. That statement is even worse than it sounds, for we live the reality of the refugees that come to Brazil fleeing Maduro’s regime. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/05/30/lula-maduro/ #grownostr #nocensorship #helpbrazil
UNJUST JUSTICE Last week the Supreme Court, condemned a former president of Brazil to 33 years in prison. The investigation process, pieces of evidence, and testimonies that were used in the case were the same used in the case of the current president, which was also condemned in three different cases of corruption. You might ask, why the current president is in charge of the country? That is a curious fact, for the current president, the case was considered invalid for some technical reason, but for the other accused it wasn’t. #grownostr #nocensorship #helpbrazil
A GOOD OLD CLASSIC Back in the day when the mainstream media was on our side! #grownostr #nocensorship #helpbrazil
CENSORSHIP ON THE WAY – PART 2 Today we are busy! A famous Brazilian comedian was censored by the Justice Court of the State of São Paulo. His videos were taken down, he is going to be fined if continues to tell or even keep personal records of the jokes. What were the jokes? Politically incorrect joke, as every good joke should be! #grownostr #nocensorship #helpbrazil
CENSORSHIP ON THE WAY Today we had a great blow! An unlawful decision by the Supreme Court decided to annul the mandate of a member of parliament that was fighting against the censorship law. In addition to that, four other members of parliament are on the same path. All five are against the law in question. Beyond that, the congressmen that had his mandate annulated was, prior to the election, the prosecutor that put in jail for corruption the current president of Brazil. We are, in fact, living in a dictatorship, just like Nicaragua! Where the opposition gets arrested, exiled, or worse. Please, spread the word to all your contacts! Let our voices be heard!
Bitcoin Blockade! Let's fight it the right way! In Brazil, as in every corner of the world, criminals search for every way they can to take people’s money! A very popular bait used by Brazilian criminals is crypto, especially Bitcoin. Every day we are bombarded with news of a new scam worse than the previous. That creates in the population the sense of danger whenever they hear the word Bitcoin. That is the main excuse governments use to try to regulate Bitcoin and the crypto world, as I mentioned in my last post. Worse than that, because the bad things that happens, they try to pass laws that gives them the power to censor whatever makes harder for them to control the population. The best way to deal with misinformation is contrasting it with the right one! Censorship is never the answer! Education on how bitcoin works, how to keep the keys safe, is essential in the fight against misinformation and government rule! Nostr is a important tool in this figt!
Last year, a law that regulates crypto currencies was approved by Congress and sanction by the president. As every good law, it's vague, so it can be applied in every circumstance whenever convenient. The excuse for the law, is to protect people form scamers, that use the Bitcoin name to fool people and take their money (that is very common in Brazil, not only using the bitcoin name). For some time, all exchanges with office in Brazil have to comply KYC standards. The end goal is to monitor transactions for tax collection. That what they really want! One way to deal with that is using international exchanges, but than we need to use dollars and, in the end, fall for the same trap. The other way is to use decentralized exchanges, but they are not user friendly for the average person. A good thing though, our politicians don't truly understand bitcoin or any crypto, we might be able to navigate those waters. That's why the development of decentralized platforms is so important. As they evolve, they get more reliable and known to the people. That's the way to achieve our freedom.
Supreme Court judge imposes R$100.000,00 (equivalent to U$20.000,00) per hour, if anyone uses VPN to access services blocked by the Court, including Telegram!!! Only authoritarian countries have this kind of rules! Some say we are living in a democracy!!!
Last week, Telegram was threatened of being shut down by the Supreme Court, for sending a message alerting people of the impacts of a new legislation that aim to give the government power to block accounts and even arrest people over their opinions. The next day, Telegram sent an apologetic message: "We received an order from the Supreme Court of Brazil that binds Telegram to remove our previous message about PL 2630/2020 and to send a new message to users, which is included below.
