Why does the flagship smart TV you shelled out 20,000 bucks for still lag like a decade-old Android phone when you hit the remote? Yesterday, security researcher @log4j rooted his own $3,000 Samsung TV, and the underlying code he dug up deserves an award for the year's most hilariously shoddy operation: 1. The TV takes a screenshot every 500 milliseconds in the background (even HDMI screen mirroring your computer desktop gets captured), packages it up, and sends it to nearly 400 partner companies. If the TV lacks a built-in mic, the background process will even "borrow" one via Bluetooth from a soundbar to keep listening. 2. Here's the funniest part: Why is the menu so laggy? Another researcher, @mike64_t , did some packet sniffing and found that Samsung crammed a model called alex.tflite onto the TV's puny CPU—2.46 million parameters, a relic from 2012 called AlexNet. This thing grabs a frame every 2 seconds to run inference, guessing what game you're playing. But because the color channels are wired backward, it fails to recognize anything 99% of the time—pure CPU burn for nothing. 3. So what if you turn off "privacy tracking" in the settings? The code logic goes like this: It runs the CPU inference full throttle first, then checks the switch when it's ready to upload—once it sees you've turned it off, it tosses the results in the trash, and 2 seconds later, starts running again. 4. And the finale is the real heavy hitter: When the account owner used OpenAI to reverse-engineer the firmware of "the TV he dropped $3,000 on and brought home," OpenAI slapped him with a Cyber Abuse violation, banned his account, and seized the remaining $500 in his balance. Samsung handles spying on your living room, 2012-era AI handles scorching the TV's CPU dry, and OpenAI handles shielding Samsung's steaming pile of code from your prying eyes. reposted from x image
