I was a proud Canadian. I believed in Canada the way most people believe in the country they were born into: without question. Then one winter, we left. A break. Somewhere warm. And standing in the sun while winter waited for us back home, something shifted. I thought: why have I accepted this? Why did I think half a year of cold and dark was the price of being Canadian? That question led to more trips. Then a three-month road trip through Europe. And somewhere in the middle of it, my husband and I looked at each other and said what we'd both been thinking: we don't want to go back. Then COVID happened. Mandates. Restrictions.
