"You are free from that which you have given up hope of, and a slave to that which you covet." Desire binds the heart; it is a hidden form of worship, since to yearn for a thing is to hang your soul upon it. To despair of a thing โ€” to cut off hope in it โ€” empties the heart of it, and the empty heart is the free heart. True freedom, then, is not in possessing what you want, but in wanting nothing but Allah. Every attachment less than Him is a chain, and every letting-go for His sake is a release. โ€” Sharแธฅ al-แธคikam, commentary by Ibn สฟAbbฤd al-Rundฤซ #Islam #Hikam #IbnAtaAllah #Tasawwuf #Spirituality

Illusion is a non-existent thing set against real existence, yet the lower self is drawn to it more than to firm realities โ€” because falsehood suits its nature. Chief among these illusions is placing hope in creatures, a hope with no hope of being fulfilled. The realized ones cut all such attachments: their ambition, dependence, and fear rest with Allah alone, and so their hearts are freed from avarice and settled in contentment. โ€” Sharแธฅ al-แธคikam, commentary by Ibn สฟAbbฤd al-Rundฤซ #Islam #Hikam #IbnAtaAllah #Tasawwuf #Spirituality

Right action is not the root but the fruit โ€” it flows from a sound inner state, and a sound state itself is nourished by what Allah sends down upon the heart of knowledge and divine cognition. Al-Ghazฤlฤซ pointed to the same chain: knowledge yields a state, and a state yields good action. So do not chase deeds while neglecting the heart that produces them; tend to the ground, and the branches will bear. โ€” Sharแธฅ al-แธคikam, commentary by Ibn สฟAbbฤd al-Rundฤซ #Islam #Hikam #IbnAtaAllah #Tasawwuf #Spirituality

The worth of a deed is measured by the state of the heart, not its outward quantity. A few sincere acts from a heart detached from the world outweigh mountains of works performed by a heart entangled in worldly desire. The abstinent are shielded from riyฤสพ and hidden motives, so their small deeds are multiplied and accepted. The attached, though outwardly busy, find their works hollowed out from within โ€” as สฟAlฤซ said, "Be more concerned about the acceptance of an action than about the action itself." โ€” Sharแธฅ al-แธคikam, commentary by Ibn สฟAbbฤd al-Rundฤซ #Islam #Hikam #IbnAtaAllah #Tasawwuf #Spirituality

"Perhaps your state is bad, yet appears good to you โ€” because your companion is even worse than you." Ibn สฟAbbฤd warns that this is among the gravest afflictions of the heart: to keep company with one whose spiritual state is beneath yours, and thereby find your own condition pleasing by comparison. Such false satisfaction gives birth to self-approval (al-riแธฤ สฟan al-nafs), which the Shaykh has already identified as the root of every evil. The remedy is honest companionship with those whose state elevates you and whose speech points you toward Allฤh. โ€” Sharแธฅ al-แธคikam, commentary by Ibn สฟAbbฤd al-Rundฤซ #Islam #Hikam #IbnAtaAllah #Tasawwuf #Spirituality

"Do not accompany him whose state does not lift you, nor his words guide you to Allah." Companionship (แนฃuแธฅba) is a foundational principle of the spiritual path โ€” the true benefit of a companion is twofold: that his very state elevates your aspiration toward Allah, and that his words point you back to Him. It is not required that he be perfect in every virtue; it suffices that his aspiration surpasses yours and his speech is more sound. Beware, though, of company that draws you into ostentation or a false front, for the sins of the heart are graver than the sins of the limbs. As the sages have said: a person's nature is quietly drawn from the nature of those around him. โ€” Sharแธฅ al-แธคikam, commentary by Ibn สฟAbbฤd al-Rundฤซ #Islam #Hikam #IbnAtaAllah #Tasawwuf #Spirituality
