This object, Messier 27, is popularly known as the Dumbbell Nebula. It is a planetary nebula located 1,000 light-years from the Solar System. It is the result of a star, similar to the Sun, reaching the end of its life. In the image, red indicates the presence of sulfur, green hydrogen, and blue oxygen. It is still not well understood why some planetary nebulae display such elaborate shapes.
