For generations, Indigenous Australians told stories about birds that spread fire to hunt. Today, researchers have documented similar behavior in Australian raptors like the black kite, whistling kite, and brown falcon reportedly carrying burning sticks and dropping them in dry areas to flush out prey. While supported by observations and studies, scientists are still working to fully understand how intentional and widespread this behavior is.

This object, Messier 27, is popularly known as the Dumbbell Nebula. It is a planetary nebula located 1,000 light-years from the Solar System. It is the result of a star, similar to the Sun, reaching the end of its life. In the image, red indicates the presence of sulfur, green hydrogen, and blue oxygen. It is still not well understood why some planetary nebulae display such elaborate shapes. Credit: P. Cosgrove image
