Note to future self!!!! Do not ever, EVER, freeze pigeons thinking you can process them at a later date. It will not work out the way you think. I spent about 2 hours thawing out and plucking pigeons only to be able to salvage just the breast. It was a total fail and ended up composting 80% of the pigeon. Lesson learned, but still had delicious pan fried pigeon breasts.

I’m a big advocate for pigeons. I see the true value of a simple bird that has been wrongly characterized. These last 4 years I’ve dedicated my self (loosely) to have them. Yet I still see a huge value in home grown chicken eggs. If anyone is interested in raising pigeons for squab, there are two books that I would recommend. 1-The Robinson method of breeding pigeons for meat by E.H. Rice Introduction by Jackson Chambers 2-Money in squabs by J.C. Long Introduction by Jackson Chambers Although they are just reprints of older books, it’s still a good read. I’ve found it very informative on how things where done in the late 1800 and early 1900 with the production of squabs. Both book cover the pretty much the same material and how at one point America was the largest producer of squabs. My goal is to bring back this super simple and almost hands free yet effective process of raising pigeons for meat. Hello #nostr fam!!!! These last two days have been wonderful as I have been enjoying a delicious pigeon broth and my wife has as well. I have no idea the nutritional value compared to a chicken, all I know is that the taste of a #pigeon #broth is far superior than that of a chicken. Happy #Laborday!!! What a perfect day to process 13 pigeons that were living the good life for the past 4 years. Laziness in my part for sure. Looking ahead, I’ve kept 4 pairs of larger pigeons and also kept 2 pairs of homers. I will be paying close attention in the following months to see who my top producers are and anything not working will be removed. 4 years ago I decided to raise pigeons for meat and I was all in. It seemed it was perfect for me since I couldn’t have any other animals due to government restrictions. I had my plan of action, I figured how to expand my growth and educated my self with plenty of outdated books that proved to be a great resource once in history. Set up housing, got my pigeons and I was ready. Yes, I thought I was ready. I didn’t account for one of my neighbors gifting me 20 laying hens and a free coop big enough to house all of them. Quickly the pigeons faded away. All my attention was taken away by the chickens, heck even the kids where exited about these little dinosaurs that brought them joy while chasing and fighting over a roach that just happened to cross their path. The kids where all in. It’s amazing how times flies by, I spend the last 4 years raising, incubating, processing chickens. All of this in a plot of land that it’s not zoned for animals. But what I learned is that if you get free chickens, you take them no matter the circumstance and make it work and boy did I make them work. What I didn’t count on was that at the same times my pigeon flock was thriving just as well. With minimal input is was growing. It is still growing and what I mostly enjoy that they raise their own babies with out any input from me. All I had to do was feed them and provide them clean water. Sadly I didn’t manage them correctly, and I still have not processed any of the pigeons for meat. I have plenty of free loaders and a line that just does not work. This year I will make my pigeons a priority and make them a part of my meat productions. I will have to remove about half or more of my birds and start fresh but hey you live and learn. #growfood #grownostr #homesteading #squabs #pigeons
