Just a reminder that exactly 16 years ago, a website was created so that anyone could claim 5 bitcoins for free!
The user only needed to enter their receiving address, solve a captcha, and that was it! They received 5 BTCs for free.
The site was created on May 28, 2010, by Gavin Andresen to help spread BTC adoption without the need for mining.
He funded the site with 1,100 bitcoins, in addition to donations.
In total, the site distributed 19,700 BTCs, or in other words, almost two pizzas!
It was shut down in 2012.
It was the Homestead Act of 1862, in which President Abraham Lincoln signed the law to encourage the settlement of the American West.
Any citizen over the age of 21 could claim about 160 acres (65 hectares) of public land.
