I see where the town where Texas had floods and people died, they have installed flooding early warning devices. I had built my own over the winter, and I am adding several more devices at key flood areas on our property to warn us when to move our cars, when to get things out of the yard and from the sheds, etc. My guess is that the ones in Texas are pretty expensive. I can do it for just a few bucks a device by using repurposed 4x4 vinyl fence posts, very cheap float switches, and an Arduino I wrote my own firmware for. I would like to see about installing a few around the island at different key areas so that others could benefit from an early warning system without having to break the bank for the devices. #arduino #raspberrypi #iot #weather #emergencies

I cant believe it! This Saturday will be my 10th edition of the "Prog Rock Hour" on Radio Hatteras (07/25/2026 8pm EDT and again at Midnight) If you are on the island, you can tune in on FM radio at 99.9 on the FM dial for the Tri-Villages and 101.5 on the FM dial for Avon/Buxton/Frisco/Hatteras. You can also tune in via streaming on our free app or from the web here: https://www.radiohatteras.org/listen-live Make sure you tune in to the "Guess the Band" segment. I doubt many will know who the mystery singer is. Below is the intro blurb I start out with on the show: My name is Brian Wharton and I'll be your guide to tonight's journey through progressive music -- the sounds that push beyond the ordinary. Tonight, we have a general mix of music across classic and modern progressive rock. image #progrock #progressivemusic #genesis #rush #yes #progressivemusic

My latest project. It is done enough to start using it. A stand-alone Meshtastic node with screen and keyboard. This is a device that uses LoRa for communication over long distances. I have been using Meshtastic and LoRa with some custom server software I wrote for the telemetry for my environmental sensors off of our dock (water temp, water level, etc.). This new node is more for resilient communication with others over a mesh network that can self heal. I do have to add a GPS for location and a buzzer for alerts. but they arent necessary for comms. I just got tired of soldering. #meshtastic #meshnetwork #hamradio #comms

This is a project I am finishing up. A water level monitoring device, using a series of float switches at 6" intervals (we are prone to flooding, so having water level data lets me know if I have to move my car or if I need to take the dog out to pee before we might see flooding). The water level switches along with temperature and other sensors are wired up to a Raspberry Pi Pico (no wifi). The Pico is then connecting to a T-Beam, running Meshtastic. The T-Beam sends JSON data on a private Meshtastic channel, where a dotnet application monitors MQTT to then push the data into a thingsboard dashboard. Works quite well #iot #internetofthings #weather #obx #obxlife #soundside #capehatteras #hatterasisland #arduino #raspberrypi #arduino #meshtastic

OK, it is that time again. The 4th Saturday of every month where I host the Prog Rock Hour on Radio Hatteras (December 27th at 8pm EST/UTC−5 and again at midnight EST/UTC−5). Tune in to hear a definition of what Progressive Rock is and to listen to a mix of classics and oddities that remind us how far rock can stretch when artists push the limits. I know it is just a couple of days after Christmas, but after all the excitement, you may need a little Progressive Rock to relax 🧑‍🎄🌲🎁❄️🧑‍🎄 image https://www.radiohatteras.org/listen-live #progrock #progressiverock #rush #yes #kingcrimson #spocksbeard #zappa #rock #music

I am looking for some advice on a hard wallet. I have had a Ledger wallet from years and years ago. And from what I understand, they have fallen out of favor. Is there a recommended hard wallet these days? For security, ease of use, etc. My ledger has been doing fine forever. Also, since I have only had the one wallet, how hard is it to move from the Ledger over to something else? NOTE: I also use Zeus and Alby Go on my phone for Lightning. Just looking for something for longer term storage. #hardwallet #cryptowallet

Ok. Today is the 4th Saturday of the month and you know what that means? The Prog Rock Hour will be playing at 8pm and again at midnight tonight on Radio Hatteras. I know that this is a Saturday and many are doing something. But if you are out on that special date and need some mood music, progressive rock is there for you. Or if you are heading out on the town to party, progressive rock is there for you too. Or if you want to just stay home and relax with a glass of wine, progressive rock is there! Progressive Rock does have something for everybody! If you are local, you can tune in to Radio Hatteras on FM 101.5 in Buxton/Frisco/Hatteras/Avon and 99.9 in the tri-Villages. Or you can stream online or in the Radio Hatteras app: https://www.radiohatteras.org/listen-live Be there or be square! image #radiohatteras #hatteras #outerbanks #obx #obxlife #rush #progrock #progressiverock #progstr @fiatjaf

I took this picture this morning at Ramp 43. This shows you a little about how much sand moves during these storms. This post that is now only a few inches above the sand used to be 3 feet above the sand before the storms hit over the last few weeks. And this is nothing compared to the sand that moved in north Buxton. #obx #storms #storms2025 #outerbanks #theouterbanks #obxlife image

While we are now cut-off from the rest of the world until probably tomorrow evening (due to ocean overwash closing down Hwy 12), the Pabst delivery guys will find a way to send in much needed relief. image #storms #storm #hatteras #hatterasisland #pbr #pabstblueribbon

I screen shot this yesterday on NCDOT of the folks working on rebuilding the berm in the canal zone, here on Hatteras Island. I am not sure what the reasoning is to keep going when there is a few feet of water on the road and ocean just flowing. I can only imagine that it is trying to stay ahead of it. Just seems a bit like Sisyphus pushing that rock. image #storms #storms2025 #noreaster

We are in the midst of a nor'easter storm here on Hatteras Island. I took my handheld weather station with me and mounted it on a weather vane I created and 3d printed. Jamaica might be getting hit by named storm Melissa, and that is all the media cares about. But, we are having a nice little storm here. #weather #storms #storms2025

For anyone interested, I am doing a radio program on Radio Hatteras called the "Prog Rock Hour", which focuses on Progressive Rock music (you know: RUSH, Yes, old Genesis, King Krimson, Zappa, etc.). If you are local, you will be able to listen to it on your FM radio 99.9 in the Tri-Villages. and 101.5 down here in Buxton/Frisco/Hatteras. If you are remote, you can stream it from www.radiohatteras.org. I am looking forward to feedback since this was my first time ever on air and first time using the editing tools. It is very rudimentary right now and hoping to learn from this first show. Below is the promo copy that is going to be broadcast prior to the show: "Join me for The Prog Rock Hour, Oct. 25 at 8 p.m. It’s a journey through a sound that dared to be different — where rock met classical, jazz, and imagination itself. Progressive rock isn’t just music, it’s storytelling in rhythm and time. From swirling keyboards and soaring guitars to intricate time changes and epic soundscapes — it’s rock with no boundaries. Experience the evolution… on The Prog Rock Hour, only on Radio Hatteras." image

Well, I have done a thing. Stepping out of my comfort zone and I am going to start doing a show on Radio Hatteras featuring progressive rock (NOTE: I recorded the first show before RUSH made their announcement of their 2026 tour, so this will be very topical). My first show will be on Saturday, October 25th at 8pm. The plan is then to do it on the last Saturday of every month. If you are on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, you will be able to listen to it on your FM radio 99.9 in the Tri-Villages. and 101.5 down here in Buxton/Frisco/Hatteras. If you are remote, you can stream it from www.radiohatteras.org image #rock #radio
