Today In History On July 28, 1868, the 14th Amendment took effect. It was designed to settle questions raised by the Dred Scott decision of the Supreme Court about the legal status of former slaves. In a 1898 case before the Supreme Court, the 14th Amendment was cited as justification for granting citizenship to a child born in the U.S. to parents who were Chinese nationals.

Happy 4th of July to my fellow Americans! And, happy weekend to everyone else. Today has been a greatly productive day. Go l finished my automated irrigation system for the garden, canned 9 pints of cucumbers into dill pickles, transferring my hefeweisen beer to secondary. Tonight, neighbors are coming over for a burger burn and afterwards we're going to watch 'The Patriot'. Happy fourth!

Fermentation finished! Time to transfer the beer to secondary to settle.
